About World Food Safety Day

The United Nations General Assembly established World Food Safety Day in 2018 to raise awareness on the importance of food safety.  The World Food Organisation (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) jointly facilitate the observance of World Food Safety Day, in collaboration with Member States and other stakeholders.

About Us

World Food Safety Day promotes the fact that food safety is a shared responsibility. With that ethos in mind, Anelich Consulting and Food Focus teamed up in 2020 to present the first Food Safety Summit for South Africa. Collaboration is a value that we all believe in, as we share a common goal of education, inspiring and empowering people in the food space to provide safe food. 

2023 is our fourth annual Food Safety Summit, and the first one we get to host in person, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and all that came with it. As in previous years, our aim is to bring you the best of local and international speakers, and the most relevant and impactful topics. We hope you will join us this year in the journey towards safer food.

Anelich Consulting was established in January 2011 by Professor Lucia Anelich, one of South Africa’s best-known and experienced food microbiologists and food safety experts. She has a PhD in Microbiology and has over 40 years of combined experience in the food industry, academia, national and international organizations in the fields of food microbiology, food hygiene, food safety, foodborne pathogens, food-related regulations, private food safety standards and related fields.

Prof Lucia Anelich is a registered Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). Amongst other achievements, she is the only person from Africa as member of the International Commission on the Microbiological Specifications for Foods (ICMSF), the first woman to have received the SAAFoST President’s Award in 2021 and was the only person from Africa invited to present the prestigious Ivan Parkin Lecture at the International Association for Food Protection 2022, in the USA.  Her business offers a variety of services for the food sector, including consulting and training in microbiological food safety matters.

From making food safely, keeping employees safe and building the right culture, to being responsible corporate citizens, and minimising the impact on our natural environment - it's about compliance and conformance to standards.

Our website and the activities we are involved in all share a common objective - to help the food industry find the answers to their compliance issues by providing them with information from recognized experts and service providers.

Food Focus is a division of Food Risk Forum, which offers a network of solutions, including Foodemy, a training directory for all topics food related; Food & Beverage Reporter, a trade magazine for the food manufacturing sector; and Food Safety Culture Solutions, offering a custom designed culture assessment tool and subsequent food safety culture interventions for the industry.
