Aligning With The WHO’s World Food Safety Day

World Food Safety Day, established in 2018 by the United Nations General Assembly, serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness about the paramount importance of ensuring food safety worldwide. This significant day is a global endeavour where the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) join hands to facilitate observance, collaborating with Member States and other stakeholders.

As leaders in their respective fields, WHO and FAO spearhead global expert groups and provide invaluable scientific advice to develop international food safety standards. Their tireless efforts are dedicated to safeguarding consumer health and supporting food trade across the globe. By working together, they strive to enhance food safety practices, protect vulnerable populations, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Anelich Consulting was established in January 2011 by Professor Lucia Anelich, one of South Africa’s best-known and experienced food microbiologists and food safety experts. She has a PhD in Microbiology and has over 40 years of combined experience in the food industry, academia, national and international organizations in the fields of food microbiology, food hygiene, food safety, foodborne pathogens, food-related regulations, private food safety standards and related fields.

Prof Lucia Anelich is a registered Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). Amongst other achievements, she is the only person from Africa as member of the International Commission on the Microbiological Specifications for Foods (ICMSF), the first woman to have received the SAAFoST President’s Award in 2021 and was the only person from Africa invited to present the prestigious Ivan Parkin Lecture at the International Association for Food Protection 2022, in the USA.  Her business offers a variety of specialist services for the food sector, including consulting and training in microbiological food safety matters.
